Old School – My Creative Approach
In this day and age, when everything is created on computers, I find too much technology actually inhibits my writing process. Not to mention all that extra screen time can be draining.
To get the most out of my storytelling, I listen to a mood setting playlist or settle somewhere that has soft background noise and write in journal notebooks. Longhand is gratifying, and it’s easy to take journals with me anywhere. Stuck waiting in line or for an appointment? Pull out a notebook and work on a scene. A little downtime in the schedule? Answer those lingering questions from earlier drafts.
Where I find technology does help immensely is researching topics where I lack expertise. For example, for Finding You in Me, I already understood how fans interact with Idols and the many ways celebrities connect with their fandoms. However, what happens behind the scenes to create those incredible, heartfelt fan experiences. It’s these engagements – and the thoughtfulness behind them – that help drive the interactive, personal nature of the Idol – Fan relationship.
Technology is also important for learning about places I haven’t visited. The tools we have now make it easier to research settings for key scenes, narrowing options down by specific characteristics that help shape the story. As an avid reader, I know how inaccurate depictions can pop me right out of the storytelling. My hope is that the scene-setting in Finding You in Me will capture your imagination and immerse you in the world of the story.
